Navarra, a land of beer
In northern Spain, Navarre has a lot to say about beer. The autonomous community is part of Euskal Herria, and this shows in its culture and in the styles that are most prevalent among small producers. It’s well worth visiting some emblematic taprooms such as Sesma Brewing or Naparbier, a pioneer in the sector not only locally but nationwide. It’s always interesting to discover the breweries of these artisans, which we list for you below. Standing out above all is the Azoáin cooperative, a shared brewhouse used by five brands: San Donato, Mitika, Saltus, Otsahien and Barceloka.

But if you want to taste a beer with a sense of place, you’ll definitely be intrigued by the Cacho Beer project, a beer brewed with Tudela’s famous artichoke, as an example of synergy with local produce. And if you’re looking for a solid medal record, there are also major accolades, such as the 2017 Best New Brewery award for Brew & Roll at the Barcelona Beer Challenge.

In the contract-brewing scene, Maiku Brewing (Egüés) and Biribil Brewing (Pamplona) are some of the beers brewed in third-party facilities, and you can try them in bars around the region. If, as a visitor, you return home, it’s almost mandatory to take a bottle from the Naparbier Barrel Series range, renowned for their barrel-aged beers that have previously held different types of spirits and even wine.
In any case, the best option is to plan a route around the area and visit the projects in person, chat with the small craft producers and taste the beer as fresh as possible in its own environment, the one it was designed for. Take note if you want to discover the beeriest side of Navarre.
