Guide to Wine Designations of Origin in Spain
A designation of origin is a legal framework that protects and promotes wines produced in a specific wine-growing region. These regions are defined by their climate, soil, grape varieties, and specific winemaking techniques, which give them unique and distinctive characteristics. The different regulatory councils are responsible for ensuring the quality and authenticity of the wines produced in each area. Let’s take a look at some of the main designations of origin for wine in Spain.
Qualified Designation of Origin Rioja
It is the oldest in the country (1925). Located in La Rioja, it is known for producing red wines, made mainly from the Tempranillo grape variety. Rioja wines are divided into four categories: Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, according to the length of aging in barrel and bottle.

Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin
It is the second-largest in terms of national production. It is limited to the northern plateau and has more than 20,000 hectares of vineyards. It mainly uses Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec grapes. Ribera del Duero wines are known for their intensity, complexity and flavors of dark fruit and spices.
Cava Designation of Origin
It is located in Catalonia and is known for producing high-quality sparkling wines. Cava is made using the traditional method, similar to that used for French Champagne, and is characterized by its freshness, acidity, and fine, persistent bubbles.
Jumilla Designation of Origin
Located in Murcia, it stands out for the production of red wines made mainly from the Monastrell grape variety. Jumilla wines are known for their intensity, body, and ripe black fruit flavors.

Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Designation of Origin
It is located in Andalusia and is world-renowned for the production of fortified wines known as Jerez or Sherry. These wines are made from the Palomino, Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grape varieties and are characterized by their dry, saline flavor and their capacity for barrel aging.
Rías Baixas Designation of Origin
It is located in Galicia and is known for producing white wines made from the Albariño grape variety. Rías Baixas wines are characterized by their freshness, acidity, and flavors of white fruits and citrus.
Designations of origin are a key tool for promoting and protecting Spanish wines. Thanks to them, consumers can identify and distinguish wines produced in a specific wine region, which allows them to understand their characteristics and quality. They also boost tourism and the local economy.
